Manchester Originals Women Are Off The Mark

Manchester Originals Women Are Off The Mark

A six wicket loss in front of their home fans at Old Trafford on Wednesday against Southern Brave was not the start which Manchester Originals Women were looking for but they bounced back immediately with a narrow victory against Oval Invincibles on Saturday and are now up and running in the 2025 Women's Hundred.

After a disappointing finish to the 2024 season, there will be plenty of relieved faces from captain Beth Mooney to the management to get their first four points on the board.

Can they now kick on and climb the table? We take a look at what Manchester Originals Women have done so far in this campaign.

One Win, One Defeat

It couldn't have got off to a worse start for Manchester Originals Women last Wednesday when both of their openers, skipper Mooney and Kathryn Bryce were dismissed for a combined one run!

Unsurprisingly, the team were unable to recover with only Amelia Kerr (14) and Seren Smale (40*) the only players to get into double figures in a very disappointing team total of 95.

Sophie Ecclestone is one of the best bowlers in the women's game but even she couldn't defend that total and Southern Brave got home with only four wickets down and 11 balls remaining.

And down to London for Saturday against a strong Oval Invincibles side but Manchester Originals had enough quality and character to get over the line thanks to Mooney hitting 70 from 45 balls at the top of the order and a wicket apiece for Bryce, Amelia Kerr and Ecclestone.

Onwards For The Originals

Mooney will be desperate for her side to make it back to back wins and get some momentum in place! But that could be easier said than done against the 2024 Women's Hundred champions London Spirit who beat Oval Invincibles by 17 runs in their opener.

After a trip to Cardiff on Saturday afternoon, Spirit will make the journey north for Monday's clash at Old Trafford as they look to defend an unbeaten record against Manchester Originals.

They were beaten by London Spirit in 2021 and 2024 with the only other head to head abandoned without a ball bowled in 2023.

So, can Manchester Originals Women make it two victories on the bounce and finally get a win over London Spirit? All will be revealed on Monday afternoon.
