Welsh Fire's Hangover From 2024 Continues

Welsh Fire's Hangover From 2024 Continues

Whether it be the defeated team from the previous season's play-off final in the English Football League Championship, or getting into a new campaign after a tiring close season, starting again in any sport, discipline or stage of life is tough to achieve.

That certainly seems to be the case with Welsh Fire Women who were beaten by London Spirit Women in last year's final and have since lost their first two matches in 2025.

Will this losing spiral continue? Or do Welsh Fire Women have the strength of mind and skills to turn this season around? Read on as we look at their 2025 season so far.

Defeats to Northern Superchargers and London Spirit

After a game at Headingley and in Cardiff, Welsh Fire Women are still pointless and one of the sides propping up the table in the 2025 Women's Hundred.

Their next assignment sees them back in front of their home fans on Wednesday when they will take on Manchester Originals. If you think they will make it third time lucky then you can find all the odds and tips for this and other games here.

The less said about their opening game defeat in Leeds the better as Welsh Fire Women leaked 141 runs while taking only four wickets before they could only post 94 of their own runs and were bowled out!

A Re-Match From The 2024 Final

If the performance at Headingley was one to move on from in a hurry, the real Welsh Fire stepped up in Cardiff on Saturday.

They lost the toss and were asked to bowl first, but there were impressive figures from their bowling attack.

Welsh Fire Women's Bowling Figures vs London Spirit Women
Bowler Balls Dots Runs Wickets
Freya Davies 19 10 16 3
Hayley Matthews 20 14 15 2
Shabnim Ismail 20 8 30 0
Jess Jonassen 20 6 32 1
Katie Levick 20 8 26 3

Ultimately, Welsh Fire were unable to chase down 125 and pulled up two runs short of London Spirit's total of 124.

But, there were good knocks from Sophia Dunkley (36), Hayley Matthews (26) and Jess Jonassen (29) who all spent valuable time in the middle with the bat.

Fans and the team management will now be hoping that those three, coupled with skipper Tammy Beaumont, can kick on in Wednesday's clash away at Manchester Originals Women.
